Predicting a severe wave within the capital and a number of other other parts of North India, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a rather unusual advisory. In an impact-based advisory, the IMD urged residents of India’s northernmost states to guard themselves from the biting cold by avoiding alcohol.

According to the IMD, severe wave conditions are likely in parts of Haryana, Punjab, UttarPradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan from December 29 onwards. Maximum temperature is additionally forecast to fall by 3 to five degrees Celsius after December 28.

What did the IMD say in its recent impact-
based advisory?

In its latest advisory, the IMD said the weather
conditions were likely to extend the danger of contracting illnesses just like the flu, and will also
lead to symptoms like runny/stuffy nose and nosebleeds, which usually set in or are aggravated thanks to prolonged exposure to the cold.

But is alcohol really bad for you in cold

An alcohol to beat the coolness on a chilly
winter night might sound sort of a good idea to
many, but the IMD and a number of other health experts have warned otherwise.

While alcohol may cause you to feel warmer, it
actually reduces your blood heat and compromises your immunity if you then venture out into the cold, experts say.

Heavy alcohol consumption is usually linked to an
increased risk of hypothermia and other conditions linked to extreme weather . The study points out that alcohol has psychological and behavioural effects, which may impact a person’s ability to properly perceive how cold it’s . Hence, cases of individuals succumbing to hypothermia after drinking heavily and spending out outdoors are very commonly reported in places with extreme weather .

How does alcohol reduce your body

Alcohol may be a vasodilator, which suggests that it causes blood vessels to relax and dilate or open. So after consuming alcohol, the quantity of blood delivered to the skin’s surface increases, making you are feeling warmer as a result. this is often also what causes an intoxicated person to seem flushed.

What is a chilly wave and what was the IMD’s

In its forecast on Friday, the IMD said minimum
temperatures would rise within the plains of north India

including in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan — until Sunday, before falling by 3 to five degrees Celsius.

According to the IMD, cold northwesterly winds blowing from the western Himalayan region would cause cold or severe wave conditions in parts of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh from Monday onwards.
