The picture of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of India, who had done ‘Satyagraha’ against British oppression and colonialism for a lifetime, will now be seen on the British currency pound. Mahatma Gandhi will be the first black person whose picture is going to be printed on the pound. A picture of Bapu on a currency that was said to symbolize the strength and splendor of the British government, whose sun was never set,  this is considered a historical event.

According to the report of the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, The Royal Mint Advisory Committee, which advised on the design and content of the coins, has started working on the design of the coins bearing Bapu’s picture. The main architect of this historical event is Rishi Sunak of Indian origin, UK finance minister. He has supported the campaign to recognize the work of people from the Black and Minor races who helped build the modern Britain.

In a letter to Zehra Zaidi, who led the We Too Built Britain campaign, Rishi Sunak said, “Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities have made a tremendous contribution to the development of Britain’s shared culture.” Mahatma Gandhi will be the first black person whose picture will be seen on the currency of Britain. ‘ Zehra Zaidi has thanked Rishi Sunak for his support.

The UK Ministry of Finance has said that Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has written to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee to recognize the contribution of the Black, Asian and other racial minority communities to British coins. He said that the committee is going to issue a coin to greet Mahatma Gandhi at the present time. This independent committee of experts recommends the subject and design of the coins to the UK Finance Minister.
