A day after two controversial agricultural bills were passed in the Lok Sabha despite opposition from the BJP’s oldest ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal, a farmer opposing the bills in Punjab attempted suicide on Friday.

The farmer tried to commit suicide at a protest site in Badal village, the home town of the Badal family active in Punjab politics in Muktsar district. It is believed that 60-year-old farmer Pritam Singh was upset over the passage of agricultural bills in the Lok Sabha.

The farmer feared that the bill would be against the farmers, the condition of the farmer has been stated to be critical. Farmers are demonstrating in Badal village just outside the residence of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal against the bills brought by the central government. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the only Akali Dal minister in the Narendra Modi government, resigned from the Union Cabinet on Thursday in protest of these bills.
Announcing the decision of the minister to resign from the Union Cabinet, SAD President Sukhbir Badal said that the party would continue to support the government and the BJP, but would oppose anti-farmer policies.
