The manner in which the BJP severely criticized the uproar of members of opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha on agricultural bills, the Home Minister termed it a violation of parliamentary decorum and Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu justified the suspension of members, raising many questions.

Many questions also arise because Harivansh, a journalist-turned-Deputy Speaker of the Rajya Sabha, ‘saddened’ by the behavior of the members announced a day’s fast and wrote a letter to Venkaiah Naidu.

The question is whether the BJP has never (in the words of Home Minister Rajnath Singh) ‘violated parliamentary norms’? Did BJP not do anything which was ‘shameful’ for democracy when it was in opposition?

BJP’s record?

Overall, the question arises that when the BJP was in opposition, it has created a ruckus in the Parliament, whether it has stopped the proceedings of the Parliament or not?

Taking a look at the old newspapers, it seems that the BJP has not allowed the Parliament to function once, not once. It has also made a huge furore in Parliament, sabotage, shouted slogans, not allowed Parliament to run in 2G, coal scam, foreign capital investment in multi-brand retail and farmers’ affairs. Once the entire session of the Rajya Sabha went in vain and the BJP did not allow any work to be done.

September 11, 2011

Earlier, on September 11, 2011, the BJP had created a ruckus in both houses of Parliament demanding the resignation of the then Home Minister P Chidambaram, many times the house proceedings were halted and the business was not conducted. BJP members were demanding the resignation of the Home Minister against the police lathicharge in Delhi.

Lal Krishna Advani himself had raised this issue in the Lok Sabha and met the then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee separately and complained. Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley took command in the Rajya Sabha and did not allow any work to be done. He had also justified it.

Multi brand retail

51 percent foreign capital investment in multi-brand retail was an issue that the BJP strongly opposed and did not allow the House to run for several days. Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Smriti Irani were among the most opposed to the bill. Irani was in the Rajya Sabha. There was so much opposition in the Rajya Sabha that his action was stopped for several days. Ravi Shankar Prasad had openly alleged that the American company Walmart had spent $ 250 million and lobbying for it.

BJP leader Nitin Gadkari had announced to oppose the issue in September before it started. A large part of the winter session was over, the Rajya Sabha was not allowed to function. Finally, the Bill was passed in the first week of December.

What is BJP doing now?

Recall that 8 MPs have been suspended for a week in the Rajya Sabha on Sunday following an uproar over the Agricultural Bills. Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu took this action on Monday. Naidu said that the way the MPs behaved was very bad. There was a lot of uproar after the passage of the farmers’ bills in the Rajya Sabha and MPs of opposition parties raised slogans against it.
The MPs to be suspended include Derek O’Brien, Sanjay Singh, Rajiv Satav, KK Ragesh, Ripun Bora, Dola Sen, Syed Nazir Hussain and Elamaran Karim. As soon as the session started on Monday, the MPs of the opposition parties shouted loud slogans once again. This action of the Chairman shows that he is very strict as he took immediate action today after the commotion yesterday and did not take much time in this action.

On Saturday evening, 12 opposition parties gave notice of a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Harivansh. But the government strongly defended the Deputy Speaker and called the opposition’s behavior in the Rajya Sabha a violation of parliamentary decorum and a shameful act for democracy.
