Kochi : Hibi Eden, Member of Parliament from Ernakulam, has shown an exemplary way by setting up a well-equipped bus shelter at Kaloor, which will enable the commuters to patronize the public transport. Yesterday, actor and classical dancer Asha Sharath inaugurated the state-of-the-art women friendly bus waiting shelter at Kaloor bus stand in the down town of Kochi. Deputy of Commissioner of Police Poonguzhali IPS inaugurated the feeding room associated with the bus shelter.
The 176 sqft bus shelter is constructed with many facilities which a commuter can no longer expect in a usual bus waiting shed. This is a woman friendly bus shelter, having an exclusive feeding room to support the need of nursing mothers. The feeding room is well-lit and it has comfortable sofas and television set. A beautiful painting of breastfeeding mother by noted artist Ratish Ravi adorns the wall of the room.
The waiting area for commuters has ample seating capacity and a ramp is also provided for differently-abled. A toilet block has also been facilitated adjacent to the waiting area. CCTV cameras are provided outside considering the importance of safety and security of travellers.
“Kaloor bus station is one of the major transit points in the city, where buses coming from afar destined for places like Kottayam, pass through. The need for a safe resting place for women commuters has been a long-pending demand. There is an abattoir behind this place and the vehicles carrying animals to the abattoir go in through the stand. Previously there was only a shed roofed with sheets. As there was enough space, we came up with an idea of having a better bus shelter with all amenities so that the people feel safe while travelling. So, an amount of Rs. 25 lakh was sanctioned for this project during the last phase of my tenure as Ernakulam MLA,” said Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden.
Hibi Eden was a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Ernakulam during 2011 to 2019.
